We all know being a caregiver for individuals with special needs can be challenging under “normal” conditions. What do you do when our “normal” is interrupted? What can we do during this pandemic? How do we remain calm under these “not so normal “ conditions? Well, glad you asked before losing hope. Here at Ablebeforedisable, we recommend these 3 steps to help you regain your peace of mind.
- Turn every academic lesson into an activity. For example, reading a snack recipe or instructions for a game counts towards reading minutes with an additional perceived reward attached. Draw your student’s interest in the concept being taught which creates an interactive teachable moment
- Do not refer to the word “school”. By utilizing academic terms while you are instructing from home, an individual withq1 special needs could experience anxiety. As an alternative create a visual schedule where a block of time can be designated as options with no demands but choices to complete a task.
- Set goals that are easily achievable then gradually introduce goals that require assistance. Build a sense of accomplishment and independent learning before overwhelming him or her with higher-level instruction.
- Remember your student is watching you closer than ever before. He or she is looking at you for direction, a sense of security, and belonging. Be the student you want to see in your student! Try reading a book on your student’s ability and interest level. Take turns reading, assist when asked, and acknowledge his or her effort by using positive words of affirmation. Develop peace of mind.
